Northampton Hospital Reuse PlanNorthampton, Massachusetts |
The Northampton State Hospital has been a significant landmark in its community since its inception in the late 1850's. Since the 1960s, societal changes have rendered large mental health institutions like Northampton obsolete, yet the structures retain their historic value and many remain viable for a new use. |
This adaptive reuse plan envisions the site's next century of use in terms of providing employment & residential opportunities that complement the needs of the surrounding community, protecting the quality and accessibility of open space and the adjacent Mill River riparian zone, and retaining the historic character of the Northampton area. True to traditional communities, a connective pedestrian environment and a mixed-use center are the genesis of the new plan. Major components include: an office and light industrial zone that provides much needed employment to the area; a hotel with conference and banquet facilities; civic uses such as a new mental health educational center, and child & elder care; and a diverse range of residential types which are all dynamically tied together by a traditional "main street" within the mixed-use village center. |

Employment and residential are joined by the mixed-use village center. Historic structures are adapted to new uses and woven in with new development. |
