Al Wasl Master Plan

Location:

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Located 30 kilometer (18 miles) from the capital city of Riyadh, the Al Wasl project forms a key component of an emerging development corridor near King Khaled International Airport. As one of the first projects in this area, Al Wasl will set the standard for future development in the region. To meet the needs of an emerging market, Al Wasl has been designed as a fully integrated community with a broad mix of residential, civic and commercial uses.

The primary structuring element of the Master Plan is the network of existing ‘wadis’ (riparian corridors) that traverses the site. The layout of streets and the location of different land uses respect this natural drainage system and the meandering 'wadis' in turn help to create an organic open space structure that offsets the formal street layout. Block patterns and housing types have been developed to foster a pedestrian-friendly environment and cater to a wide range of lifestyle needs while also meeting the requirements for privacy and separation mandated by the local culture. High rise housing and office blocks along transit boulevards provide a contrast to lower density villa neighborhoods. At the core of the city, a Grand Mosque set within a water feature forms a dramatic civic node.
