Alok Vyas joined Calthorpe Associates in June 2000. He is an Urban Planner and Designer and a Professional Architect from Mumbai, India. His interests include Urban Design, Land Use, Transportation and Architecture. He brings to Calthorpe his social perspectives and work experiences from India. Some of his prominent projects at Calthorpe Associates are;
- Jumeriah Village South, Dubai, UAE - Managing this 2,000 acre new development from design development to engineering with a team of international consultants for 190,000 new residents in the booming residential market of Dubai. This development emphasizes on high-rise oriented mixed use density with a focus on strong community and pedestrian quality using interweaving open space linkages within a defined geometric neighborhood setting.
- Palm Deira Master Plan, Dubai, UAE - Beginning from the design stage, worked with a team of international consultants in the development of a master plan for a major new reclaimed development in Dubai. With a projected population of nearly 500,000, the project organizes varying land uses and intensities around a strong network of regional and local transit lines.
- Stapleton Redevelopment Plan, Denver, CO - The nation's largest redevelopment project, the former Stapleton International Airport covers 4,700 acres within the City of Denver. Commercial, employment, civic and residential uses will all be linked by walkable streets and a continuous, site-wide armature of open space, including a restored prairie park. - Hawaii Regional Military Housing Privatization, Honolulu, HI - Located on the island of Oahu which is part of teh Navy Public-Private Venture Housing Initative (PPV), this project consists of five sites, McGrew Point, Hokulani, Moanalua Terrace, Halsey Terrace and Radford Terrace. Phase One of the contract involves the construction of 918 new homes, and renovation of 1,040 existing military family homes over the next four years.
- Richardson DART Station Area Plan, Richardson, TX - With the new DART line starting operation, this plan examines station area urban development, in a way that would transform auto-oriented land use into mixed-use, transit-supportive development. See photo simulations of the two station areas.
- Juniper Ridge (formerly Red Rock), Coalville City, UT - This 248 acre development is designed around the large rock outcrop just south of Coalville, Utah. This innovative design of clustered development preserves the existing open space while providing residents with pedestrian friendly compact and diverse neighborhoods with high quality public spaces and streets.
- Austin Ranch, City of Colony, TX - A 70-acre in-fill overall project northeast of Dallas, Texas. The master-plan consisted of a high-density gridded neighborhood plan, featuring a variety of unit types and mixed-use buildings with structured parking. Recently, Alok worked on the Phase III plan of the overall master plan that has a high-density neighborhood town center with structured parking. See built images of Phase I and Phase III.
- Richmond BART Transit Village, Richmond, CA -This project, directly adjacent to the multi-modal station in the city of Richmond, CA provides for a mix of ownership housing opportunities in a high density, mixed-use configuration. It promotes transit ridership by providing high-density housing within walking distance of the regional rail system (BART), Amtrak, and local bus service. Before joining Calthorpe Associates, Alok continued his internship in the transportation planning department of Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) in Detroit, Michigan and was involved in the 'T-21 Century Plan' process.
Alok received his Master's in Urban Planning degree from the Urban and Regional Planning Program at The University of Michigan. He was entrusted with two Graduate Student Research Assistant positions, both in transportation planning, one with Prof. Jonathan Levine, Coordinator of Doctoral Studies, and one with Ms. Michelle Ann Barnes at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI).
Alok received his Bachelor's honors degree in Architecture from Sir J. J. College of Architecture, Mumbai (formerly Bombay), affiliated with The University of Mumbai, India. He worked as Project Architect for Pheroze Kudianavala Consulting Architects Pvt. Ltd., a multi-services architectural firm in downtown Mumbai. He has two years of work experience with this firm.
