David Blake is an urban designer and licensed landscape architect with more than 14 years of comprehensive experience in town planning and site design. His professional experience includes town center, residential, and recreational park designs, with an emphasis on designs that respond sensitively to challenging topography. He has created and implemented dozens of site and landscape development plans and a variety of amenity designs, and he has been involved in the management and production of diverse and complex working drawings throughout his career.
At Calthorpe Associates, Mr. Blake has been a senior designer and project manager on a variety of projects, including:
- Issaquah Highlands, Issaquah, WA - A current project, located 17 miles east of Seattle, Washington and in the hills above the town of Issaquah. This 2,000 acre 'new town' project is based on a regional growth management plan that includes Microsoft's second major new campus, and allows 3 million square feet of office development, 3,250 dwelling units and a 400,000 square foot, high density town center, all on 800 acres of land. This walkable, medium-to-high density community serves a range of income and lifestyle groups, with activity focused in and around the town center and a neighborhood village center to the east. A complex open space system plays a major role with over 1,200 acres of wooded hillsides, protected wetlands, and community and neighborhood parks interwoven throughout the site. As Project Manager and Lead Designer, Mr. Blake has overseen all aspects of this project, from initial conception to implementation of site elements. See built images of this community.
- Stapleton Redevelopment Plan, Denver, CO - The nation's largest redevelopment project, the former Stapleton International Airport covers 4,700 acres within the city of Denver, Colorado. Commercial, employment, civic, and a mix of residential uses will all be linked by walkable streets and a continuous,1,200 acre armature of open space, including a restored prairie park. Mr. Blake was instrumental in the planning of the town center and residential neighborhoods, and created a schematic plan for Central Park, the site's centerpiece for recreational activity. See built images of this on-going project.
- Englewood Town Center, Englewood, CO - Located south of Denver, Colorado, the plan involves a series of architectural components, integrating varied land uses into a vibrant and transit-oriented town center. The plan includes high-density rental apartments and a mix of commercial and retail uses surrounding a pedestrian corridor, and connecting future light rail with a public plaza and linear park. Mr. Blake generated the design and program for the overall site and produced a preliminary grading plan, detailing the placement of a mixed-use housing component on a steep portion of the site. See built images of this project.
- Mountain Corridor Specific Plan, Ontario, CA - A redevelopment plan for a strip commercial area in Ontario, California. Calthorpe Associates has produced a set of development standards, a detailed master plan, and schematic street and park designs to create a mixed-use town center with an entertainment/ retail catalyst. Mr. Blake produced designs and standards for streetscape and park improvements.
Prior to joining Calthorpe Associates, Mr. Blake worked as an independent consultant to various landscape architects in the Bay Area, including: Robert Lamb Hart and Merrill & Associates in San Francisco and Howard Fields & Associates in Sausalito, CA. His involvement included preparation of schematic plans for a major urban planning project in Reno, NV; site planning and park design for Gateway Valley, a single-family residential development in the Central Valley; and design development plans for Sunset Beach Resort, an international resort in Saudi Arabia.
Mr. Blake graduated with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Louisiana State University - College of Design in 1985.
