John Beutler

Associate

John Beutler is an urban designer and planner with over seven years of experience at Calthorpe Associates. His work has ranged from public participation to detailed site design to large-scale city planning. John's interests and research include the interrelationships between transportation and land use, the definition of spaces and districts with urban design, and the integration of the automobile into walkable environments.

The current focus of his work is managing the development of large scale master plans both within the United States and internationally. These projects involve the integration of land use, transportation, basic infrastructure, historic resources, financial viability and cultural factors as well as coordination with a wide variety of other consultants working simultaneously on complicated issues of feasibility and sustainability. His recent international work has included projects in Jordan, Pakistan, Senegal and Saudi Arabia.

As well as master planning, John's work has included urban revitalization, detailed planning for small mixed-use developments, and public smart growth planning. Selected current and past examples include:

  • Mesa del Sol, Albuquerque, New Mexico - Working with the master developer, John serves as the lead designer for this 13,000 acre site within the city of Albuquerque. On completion, this new city district will include major open spaces, civic amenities, a multi-modal transportation network, and a full range of land uses.
  • Centennial Springs Village, Las Vegas, Nevada - The plan for this 40-acre Las Vegas site integrates small-lot single family homes, townhomes, retail, small office, live/work dwellings and open space into an integrated site plan. Detailed studies of the sharing of parking between uses reduced the total parking needed and made the site more pedestrian friendly and human scale.
  • Carlsbad Village, Carlsbad, California - Carlsbad Village is the 200-acre historic core of the city of Carlsbad. In an effort to initiate a discussion about the area's future, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce sponsored a workshop and concept planning process for the Village. The plan shows a vision of a more vibrant, pedestrian-oriented district brought about by targeted reinvestment by both private landowners and the City.
  • Smart Growth Twin Cities, Minneapolis/St. Paul Region, Minnesota - This project was a regional and local planning effort in Minnesota's Minneapolis/St. Paul region. John lead the design effort for the creation of detailed smart growth plans in selected communities for areas between 20 and 200 acres. The sites included revitalization and new growth areas. These plans serve as smart growth models and demonstrate the urban design principles which were being used in the regional planning effort. The design process for each site included holding public workshops, integrating the concerns of diverse interest groups into a preferred alternative, and creating regulatory and implementation tools.

John received a Master of City Planning degree from the University of California at Berkeley and the 1999 College of Environmental Design Professional Promise Award for his work as a student there. During his graduate studies, he participated in an international research effort with Dr. Robert Cervero on the adaptation of transit to a variety of modern land use environments, the result of which was the co-authored paper, "Adaptive Transit: Enhancing Suburban Transit Services." Successful strategies studied included busways and flexibly-routed buses. John did his undergraduate studies in architecture and business, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Management degree from Missouri State University, summa cum laude.
