Brandon Silar
Senior Designer
Brandon is committed and passionate about urbanism, regionalism, social science, economics, and democratic, multidisciplinary approaches to issues in these areas. At Calthorpe Associates, he specializes in the collaboration and planning of sustainable utility systems at the intersection of water management, dry utility and transportation infrastructure. He also contributes his special knowledge of building-scale sustainable systems to Calthorpe’s list of services. Brandon joined the firm in 2006.
While working at Calthorpe Associates, Brandon has been involved in a diverse array of projects, including:
- Fresno Southeast Growth Area Specific Plan (Fresno, California)
- Stapleton (Denver, Colorado)
- Daybreak (South Jordan, Utah)
- Alameda Point (Alameda, California)
- California Vision (State of California)
Brandon is an active speaker in urban design; he has been invited as a guest speaker/critic at Stanford University Department of Urban Studies, California Polytechnic State University Department of City and Regional Planning, and The New Partners for Smart Growth.
Brandon competed internationally on the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) 2005 Solar CalPoly team to design, build and operate a sustainably conscious, energy efficient home for entry in NREL’s 2005 Solar Decathlon competition in Washington D.C. Cal Poly was awarded 3rd place overall.
Brandon was involved in a design effort to address the concerns and future of downtown Paso Robles, California after the December 2003 earthquake damaged its core structures. His collaborative studio identified and participated in development opportunities in the downtown core targeting the encouragement of business, strengthened community character and provisions for a more sustainably operated town center. His studio was awarded an Honorable Mention by the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) as a notable model for Architectural Education.
Brandon has a degree in Architecture from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and is currently working toward licensure.
