Planner

Nicholas Wilson is a planner with the regional and large‐scale master planning team at Calthorpe Associates. Nick is a geographer by training with a focus on spatial modeling using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for land use and land cover change analyses.  Nick is passionate about the use of spatial techniques to inform regional planning for more sustainable communities that encourage walkability, transit oriented development and reduced sprawl. At Calthorpe, Nick is helping develop the Urban Footprint model as part of the Vision California Project.

Prior to joining Calthorpe, Nick spent a number of years in the environmental and sustainable development field. He worked for the US Fish and Wildlife Service where he carried out a project mapping and assessing the habitat of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Southeastern Oregon. Nick was also a Peace Corps Volunteer in the West African nation of The Gambia where he worked in sustainable agricultural development in peri-urban communities. He has also worked on projects for the Long Term Ecological Research Network and as a GIS teaching assistant at Clark University.

Nick completed his Bachelor of Arts with honors in International development and Sociology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia and his Master’s degree in GIS for Development and Environment at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts.

His work at Clark included a long-term trend analysis of satellite derived climate data of Sahelian West Africa and developing methods for assessing whether land cover change can be attributed to map error or true change. He has also been an active participant in a number of conferences, including the Association of American Geographers.
