Forming an extension of the city of Al Ain, the historic 'Garden City' of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, Aflaj Al Foah will be a compact, mixed-use development designed around an existing date farm. The plan aims to set a precedent for future growth in this region by establishing a complete community that is well integrated into its surrounding urban fabric. Traditional architecture, construction materials, shading techniques and water conservation methods will be used and adapted to current needs.
The plan comprises of a Town Center, ten Neighborhood Centers, a Resort and Heritage Village. Each neighborhood, designed as a contemporary interpretation of a traditional Emirati village, will include traditional spaces such as ‘Fareej’, ‘Sikak’, ‘Barahat’ and ‘Dikak’. Special spaces will be tailored to the needs of women, children and the elderly; creating places that are actively used while respecting privacy concerns. The Centers will provide a high level of retail, civic and cultural amenities, forming activity nodes linked by an elaborate pedestrian network. At a finer grain, clusters of local mosques, shops and civic amenities, as well as parks and playgrounds will be distributed throughout the neighborhoods. A unique feature of the open space network will be the date farm, reconfigured to be within easy walking distance of all the neighborhoods.
